I have been using this technique when cutting my cakes and maybe some people already know about it but just in case others have not heard of it yet, here is how I cut my cake evenly and you will see without so much crumbs and you will see how really easy it is.
All you need is...a thread and maybe a ruler if you are too particular and exacting and a toothpick! Works well with small, big, tall, flat cakes! Have fun!
