Turon is a Filipino snack from plantain bananas and jackfruit rolled in brown sugar and wrapped in lumpia wrapper that is fried to a crisp. Easy and yummy! How to make Turon by Foxy Folksy

Turon (Banana Lumpia or Banana roll) is a Filipino snack that is made of slices of Saba banana rolled in brown sugar, wrapped in lumpia (spring roll) wrapper which is then fried. A special turon would also be stuffed with slices of jackfruit or "langka" as we call.

Saba (or Cardava or plantain in English) is really common kind of banana in the Philippines that is usually used for cooking (green or ripe) but can also be eaten raw when ripe.

I am not sure if it is available in other places outside Asia and I was not able to find it in Germany so when we came home to the Philippines last month, I brought some green ones back and this Turon recipe is the first thing I did once some of them got ripe. saba banana

Here are also others recipes that use Saba banana:

Since I was not able to bring jackfruit from the Philippines as well, I have to settle with the frozen ones I bought from the Asian shop near our area. They were good, almost as good as the fresh ones. The canned ones would also be fine I guess but I haven't personally tried them yet.

Turon is best served while still warm and the wrapper is still crispy.

Ingredients

  • 5 pieces Saba banana or plantain banana
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup jackfruit - cut into strips
  • 10 Lumpia or spring roll wrapper
  • 2 cups cooking oil

Instructions

  • Prepare the lumpia wrappers by peeling them apart, then cover the peeled wrappers with damp paper towel to keep them moist.
  • Peel the saba bananas and cut each into halves lengthwise.
  • Place the brown sugar into a flat dish and roll the slices of banana completely covering each slice with generous amount of brown sugar.
  • Place banana slice along the end of a lumpia wrapper closer to you. Add strips of jackfruit along the length of the banana. Fold both sides (left and right) of the wrapper inward towards the banana. Use water to moisten the wrappers so it is easier to fold. Now roll it towards the other end away from you. Use water again to seal the edge.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan over low heat. Once the oil is hot, add some of the lumpia-wrapped bananas and fry for 3-5 minutes each side or until the wrapper turns golden brown. Drain them on a paper towel and serve while warm and the wrapper is crispy.
